Rep. Jim Himes said Wednesday that Republicans’ rebuke of Sen. Elizabeth Warren on the Senate floor Tuesday evening simply served to energize the “activist wing” of the Democratic party.
Mr. Himes, Connecticut Democrat, stipulated that he might not be the best source on Senate rules since he’s a member of the U.S. House.
“But as a political matter, if Mitch McConnell wanted to further activate an already-activated Democratic activist wing, boy did he ever do that last night,” Mr. Himes said on CNN’s “New Day.”
Democrats have been holding the floor to protest the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican, to be the next attorney general.
Mrs. Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, said she was quoting words from Coretta Scott King, the late wife of Martin Luther King Jr., who had accused Mr. Sessions during the time of a previous nomination for a federal judgeship of an attempt to frighten elderly black voters.
But Republicans said Mrs. Warren violated chamber rules that no senator can question the conduct of another and voted to rebuke her.
