SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - American Legion members from the Springfield area are making their annual pilgrimage to Abraham Lincoln’s tomb.

The State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/2k4oQgm ) Springfield American Legion Post 32 and its auxiliaries are sponsoring Sunday’s event.

It will be the 83rd consecutive year that the pilgrimage has been held, making it the longest continuously running Lincoln birthday event in the U.S.

Last year more than 200 American Legion members from across the nation attended.

Sunday’s event will include speeches and a placement of a wreath at the former president’s tomb in Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery. State and local dignitaries will be attending, as well as American Legion members.

The American Legion in encouraging public attendance.
