SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 6-mile stretch of Interstate 80 near Salt Lake City has to close so that state wildlife officials could help a herd of elk migrate.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2kJCAkZ ) that that officials closed the stretch of I-80 in Parleys Canyon for about 45 minutes Monday while about a dozen animals, including one moose, were herded across the highway.

Elk and the lone moose had been reportedly spotted in median areas of the freeway. State transportation and wildlife officials were concerned there would soon be a crash if they were not allowed to cross the road.

Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Scott Root says a helicopter was used to herd the animals away from the freeway toward 10-foot-wide ramps, which allowed the animals to jump over the fence line. They were then herded away from I-80.
