LAS VEGAS (AP) - Clark County School District is struggling to find special education teachers for classrooms.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2kJP3VN ) that of roughly 778 teaching vacancies in the district, 204 of them are special education positions.

Clark County’s struggle is not uncommon. Nationwide, at least 42 states reported a teacher shortage in special education to the U.S. Department of Education this school year.

Clark County Director of Special Education Cynthia McCray says the field is difficult because teachers need additional skills.

In hopes of attracting all teachers. Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed budget includes initiatives to attract educators including $5 million for the Teacher Incentive Fund, which provides up to $5,000 in stipends to newly hired special education teachers.
