RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Membership on the University of North Carolina system’s governing board would be reduced by 25 percent in legislation receiving bipartisan support from a House committee.
The panel voted Tuesday to decrease the UNC Board of Governors from the current 32 positions to 28 this summer, then to 24 in mid-2019. The House and Senate each elect eight members every two years, but going forward would choose six. The legislation now heads to the House floor.
Bill sponsor Rep. David Lewis of Dunn says the change would result in a more efficient and effective board. UNC system President Margaret Spellings has said reducing the board’s size is worth exploring.
Three committee Democrats voted no. Rep. Mickey Michaux of Durham says he’s worried the reduction would harm minority representation on the board.
