MIAMI (AP) - A Miami principal who lost both of his legs when a drunk driver crashed into him is giving back to the community as he recovers.

Javier Perez threw out the first pitch on opening night for the St. Thomas University baseball team on Tuesday. He used to be an assistant coach at the Miami Gardens school.

Perez, of South Dade High School, was injured last April when the driver of a sport utility vehicle veered off a road and hit him as he coached his son’s baseball team.

Perez talked to the players before the game, vowing to return and throw another pitch once he meets his goal of walking again with prosthetic legs.

St. Thomas raised about $1,000 for #javistrong to help Perez and his family with medical expenses.
