BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) - Police say a man has been arrested after a confrontation between rival gang members led to shots being fired at a shopping mall south of Boston.

No injuries were reported but the Friday evening incident created a chaotic scene at South Shore Plaza in Braintree with terrified shoppers running for safety and a SWAT team descending on the scene.

Braintree police said in a statement that 23-year-old Michael Spence was arrested without incident early Saturday in Quincy. He faces charges of unlawfully possessing and discharging a firearm.

Police said the altercation started with a chance meeting between rival gang members from Boston in the shoe department of a Macy’s store. It’s believed at least two shots were fired before the suspects fled, prompting a lockdown of the mall and a store-by-store search.
