The University of North Carolina says its men’s basketball game with Notre Dame has been rescheduled because of the water crisis in Chapel Hill.

A statement from the school Friday said the game has been moved to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Greensboro Coliseum. It was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Dean Smith Center.

UNC closed its campus at 1 p.m. Friday. Classes were canceled and staff members were told to leave campus as soon as possible.

Tickets for Saturday’s game will be honored Sunday. Those holding lower level seats in the Smith Center will be given access to the lower bowl in Greensboro Coliseum. Smith Center ticketholders in the upper level will have access to seats in the upper level at coliseum.

Student tickets will also be honored.

Bottled water is being rushed to student dorms at North Carolina’s flagship public university and nearby nursing homes after a series of malfunctions shut down the municipal water system.

Restaurants, schools in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill closed Friday after a water treatment plant was shut down by a miscue in chemical treatment and a water main break.

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority said it would be at least Saturday evening and possibly Sunday before normal water service was restored. The timing raised doubts about whether the men’s basketball game between North Carolina and Notre Dame could be played Saturday night.

University housing officials said they were delivering portable toilets and bottled water to on-campus residence halls.

A series of setbacks at a North Carolina municipal water system is forcing schools to send students and employees home early.

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority told its more than 20,000 customers Friday not to drink or use its water. The nonprofit agency said supplies were critically low after an early-morning failure in the water delivery network on top of a treatment glitch from the previous day.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools canceled classes and closed offices.

A water main break earlier Friday in Chapel Hill followed the shutdown of a treatment plant already hampered after too much fluoride was released into the water. The utility had been getting its water from Durham as a result of the fluoride problem.

Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger declared an emergency. The town said its fire department has contacted nearby agencies to be ready to bring water to fire scenes.
