WATERFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Environmental leaders and public health advocates are urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to take a role in ending a three-month strike at an upstate New York chemical plant.

The Record in Troy (https://bit.ly/2kZBBxl ) reports the Sierra Club and other environmental groups as well as public health experts sent separate letters to the Democrat asking him to take steps to end the strike by about 700 union workers at Momentive Performance Materials in Waterford.

The advocates say the public’s safety and health are at risk because the replacement workers running the plant lack experience for handling hazardous chemicals. The groups are urging Cuomo to do whatever he can “to get the experienced union workforce back on the job.”

The workers walked off the job Nov. 2 after rejecting a company offer that would reduce health insurance and retiree benefits.
