SEATTLE (AP) - Entrepreneur Nick Hanauer says his Seattle-based think tank was behind Mayor Ed Murray’s proposed property tax ballot measure to raise $55 million a year for increased homeless services for five years.
Hanauer told The Seattle Times (https://bit.ly/2mAAiT8) that he and his team at Civic Ventures brought the idea to Murray and they’ve been working on it together for the last year.
Murray pitched the property tax measure in his State of the City address last week.
The plan is to qualify the measure for the August ballot as a citizens’ initiative, which would require more than 20,000 voter signatures.
Hanauer says he’s confident the measure will pass and prepared to donate enough money so the campaign will succeed.
Hanauer contributed $1?million to last year’s statewide minimum-wage increase campaign and $1.4?million toward the 2014 gun-safety measure.
