PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - State education officials say Rhode Island high school graduation rates are on the rise but more work needs to be done.

The Providence Journal reports that the 2016 high school graduation rate of 85.3 percent is a 2-percentage-point increase from 2015.

More than half of public high schools graduated 90 percent or more of their students in four years and 14 high schools graduated more than 95 percent of their students. One charter school with 40 seniors had a perfect graduation rate.

Rates are increasing for minorities too.

Graduation rates for black students have jumped by 8 percentage points to almost 81 percent since 2014. Rates for low-income students have improved by 3 points to 78.6 percent, and rates for Hispanic students have increased by more than 6 percentage points.
