Recording artist John Legend has urged Americans to “hit the streets” in resistance to President Trump.
In an interview with entertainment magazine Fault, the Grammy-winning singer and political activist, born John Stephens, said he was “worried” that Americans would “lose their health care or get excluded” due to race, religion or “country of origin.”
“Hopefully ’Trump’s America’ won’t last very long and we get him out of here within the next four years. … I’m just hoping for the best and when we need to resist and speak out, we need to hit the streets and do it,” he said in the piece, which was published Tuesday. “For now, I’m more worried for the people less fortunate than my daughter, people who might lose their health care or get excluded because of the color of their skin, their religion and country of origin.”
The singer was a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential campaign, but hasn’t let her Election Day loss discourage him from using the media to attack Mr. Trump.
“I think in this time when we’re seeing a President Trump who has preached a message of hate and fear, and division and exclusion, we as content creators and content producers have the power to tell different stories — stories that humanize people all over the world, humanize those who are more marginalized, humanize refugees and immigrants,” he said Jan. 30 at the Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills.
The artist told reporters at PGA that critics of Mr. Trump are the “face of America.”

“Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions,” he said.
Mr. Legend has a fan base that has garnered him over 9 million followers on Facebook, 5.7 million on Instagram and 8.5 million on Twitter.
