Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Monday he wants reassurances from President Trump that nobody in the U.S. will lose their health insurance, as Mr. Trump and congressional Republicans work on their plans to repeal and replace Obamacare.
“What I want to hear today — and the president will be asked — I would like to hear the president say today that no individuals will lose their health care in America,” Mr. McAuliffe said on CNN’s “New Day.” “That’s very, very important for us going forward.”
Mr. McAuliffe, who chairs the National Governors Association, is in Washington, D.C., for an NGA meeting, and Mr. Trump is expected to drop by. The president and congressional Republicans are still working through the specifics on how and when they plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.
“It’s nice talk — we want everyone to get health care, we want to make it efficient, we want to make it low cost — but … the devil’s in the details,” said Mr. McAuliffe, a prominent supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in last year’s campaign. “The political rhetoric of a campaign has hit the reality of governing.”
“This is complex. You cannot take health care away from 18 million people. What are they going to do?” he said. “And they have realized that they’ve got themselves in a real box here today.”
“The governors, let me tell you — Democrat and Republican — we are here … we do not want to see a repeal of ACA without a replacement that includes everybody who’s covered today. I can promise you that,” Mr. McAuliffe said.
