BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - An air show along Georgia’s coast that was canceled because of Hurricane Matthew is being rescheduled for March with an expanded, three-day lineup of events.
The inaugural Wings Over the Golden Isles Airshow at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport is now planned for March 24-26, The Florida Times-Union reported (https://bit.ly/2miLEdJ). The event was originally planned for last October, but called off due to the storm.
The Navy Blue Angels will perform their high-powered aerial demonstrations in March instead of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds demonstration team, which had a few planes already on the ground in Brunswick before the October show was canceled.
The Snowbirds don’t begin their season until May, so event organizers were “very fortunate to secure the U.S. Navy Blue Angels for the March weekend,” said John Cowman, president of JLC Airshow Management.
Some of the performers in the twilight air show will have lights and special effects, the Jacksonville newspaper reported.
Performers include a P-51 Mustang, the U.S. Special Operations Command parachute team, the AeroShell Aerobatic Team and others, JLC said in a release.
The air show will also include a concert by .38 Special, and a salute to first responders.
In April 2016, Cowman announced plans for the event during a news conference, The News of Brunswick reported (https://bit.ly/2ljHlAZ).
“It’s very personal for me,” Cowman said at the time. “This is my hometown, I grew up here.”
He recalled sitting with his father along the old Altamaha Canal at the end of the runway of what is now Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, the Brunswick newspaper reported.
“I’d sit there and look at the airplanes, and dad would sit there and fish and shoot those alligator gar fish with his pistol. There were still blimps here,” Cowman said of the airport that used to serve as a Naval Air Station. “So, I’ve kind of come full circle, and it’s pretty satisfying.”
Cowman’s company, JLC Airshow Management, is also involved with Wings Over North Georgia in Rome.
