ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s Rochester City School District is working to address a diversity gap among teachers.
WHEC (https://bit.ly/2msl5CS ) says the district has started recruiting about two months ahead of schedule - and officials will travel as far as Puerto Rico as part of those efforts.
The school board says about 80 percent of teachers in the district are white. About 57 percent of the students are black, 28 percent Latino, 10 percent white and 3 percent Asian.
More than half of the students are living in poverty. The district currently has one of the worst graduation rates in the state
The district needs bilingual teachers, English as a Second Language teachers and technology teachers.
