COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A former soldier has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a Colorado man during a burglary of a marijuana grow last year.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2mtMe8i ) that Fourth District Judge Marla Prudek on Thursday sentenced 28-year-old Michael Durante to spend the rest of his life behind bars for what she called a senseless killing.

Durante, a former Fort Carson soldier, was found guilty of murder in the April 12 death of 29-year-old Kyle “Sully” Sullivan of Colorado Springs. Authorities say Durante beat Sullivan with a baseball bat. His accomplice, Daniel Newell, pleaded guilty in January to cutting Sullivan’s throat during the fight.

Durante and Newell served in Iraq together in 2010. Authorities say Durante struck the first blows in the attack.

Durante’s attorney says he plans to appeal.
