Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says the U.S. is “not experiencing the best of times” under President Trump.
The liberal justice was careful not to mention the president during a recent interview with BBC’s “Newsnight,” but made it clear she’s optimistic that the political pendulum will swing back to the left.
“I am optimistic [in the] long run,” she said. “There was a great man [who] once said that the true symbol of the United States is not the bald eagle. It is the pendulum. And when the pendulum swings too far in one direction it will go back. Some terrible things have happened in the United States but one can only hope that we learn from those bad things.”
Justice Ginsburg said she was encouraged by the millions of women around the globe who protested during the Women’s March on Jan. 21, one day after the president’s inauguration.
“I would say that we are not experiencing the best of times, but there’s hope in seeing how the public is reacting to it,” Justice Ginsburg said.
“I’ve never seen such a demonstration — both the numbers and the rapport of the people in that crowd,” she said. “There was no violence, it was orderly. So yes, we are not experiencing the best of times, but there is there is reason to hope that that we will see a better day.”
