NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo is still considering a state-owned island near the brink of Niagara Falls as a possible location for a privately operated lodge.
The Democrat last month said he wanted Empire State Development to put out a request for proposals to build a lodge on Goat Island at Niagara Falls State Park.
Some preservationists and local officials complained the project would spoil the island’s beauty and take business away from nearby hotels.
Scores of people turned out during Tuesday night’s Niagara Falls City Council meeting to oppose the idea. During the meeting a council member said she received a text message from Cuomo’s office saying he was backing off the proposal.
But state officials say Wednesday that multiple locations within the four state parks in Niagara Falls will be considered, including Goat Island.
