Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse on Tuesday praised Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, President Trump’s new pick for national security adviser, as a “certified, card-carrying grown-up.”

“Every time they add a grown-up into that equation, we should all be happy,” Mr. Whitehouse, Rhode Island Democrat, said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “And I think McMaster is a certified, card-carrying grown-up and a very, very respected military officer [among] his peers.”

“That protects against what one Republican witness at the Armed Services called the wildly stupid, dangerous, and illegal decisions that the White House can be expected to make,” Mr. Whitehouse said.

“So that’s one small piece, but that doesn’t really affect this larger problem of a government that is non-responsive to human beings because it has become so dependent on corporate support and is so infiltrated by corporate power,” he said.

Mr. Trump named Lt. Gen. McMaster as the new national security adviser on Monday. Last week, the president asked for the resignation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn after Mr. Flynn misled Vice President Mike Pence on the nature of his talks with a Russian ambassador after the November election.
