Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore launched a new website this week to act as an online repository for anti-Trump events across the U.S. as its recently inaugurated president continues to provoke protests on a regular basis.
The “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11” director announced the debut Sunday of his “Resistance Calendar,” a self-described “one-stop site” where visitors can seek and share details about demonstrations, rallies and other events being organized against President Trump and his administration anywhere in the country.
“It’s one of the main things people have been asking me for since the election: How can I find out what’s going on in my area?” Mr. Moore, 62, told The Huffington Post on Monday. “The main idea is to stop the damage of the Trump agenda, and protect the people that his administration is hurting.”
The crowdsourced website currently allows users to browse the calendar by date, query its contents for keywords and submit events of their own to be considered for publication.
Mr. Moore plans to add “easier filters and other goodies” in the near future, including “a killer map of the U.S. and a big desk-style calendar where you can just click on any day and see what’s happening with the movement across America,” he said on Facebook.
The project isn’t reserved for only anti-Trump actions, however. On Facebook the filmmaker said the website will function as a “24/7 clearinghouse of the already MASSIVE resistance to Trump, to the Republican Congress and, yes, to many of the spineless Democratic politicians out there,” and he encouraged users to submit details for events including town hall sit-ins and pro-democracy rallies alike.
Within 48 hours of its launch, the calendar amassed hundreds of listings leading into the summer, including over a dozen events slated to occur this week when members of Congress hold town hall events with constituents.
“So much is happening so fast it’s hard to keep track of all the actions popping up — but our intention is to do just that,” Mr. Moore wrote Monday on Facebook.
Mr. Moore was a vocal critic of Mr. Trump prior to his election, and said during a pre-inauguration interview on MSBC last month that he intended to be “busy, busy, busy” fighting Mr. Trump’s policies and leading “100 days of resistance” against his administration.
