The Washington Capitals announced Sunday that rookie forward Jakub Vrana has been sent back to the Hershey Bears in the AHL.
Vrana had been brought up Friday following the Capitals’ bye week along with fellow forward Zach Sanford.
With forward Andre Burakovsky out for an extended period with a hand injury, either Sanford or Vrana was expected to fill the spot.
Sanford got the initial call in the Capitals’ first game after the break against the Detroit Red Wings, and the 22-year-old scored a goal. That earned him another start against the New York Rangers and, after another strong showing, Sanford appears to have supplanted himself in Burakovsky’s role.
Vrana, who has one goal and two assists in 12 NHL games this year, returns to Hershey, where he has 13 goals and 12 assists in 33 games.
