DELAND, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a central Florida man is dead after crashing his SUV while trying to flee a traffic stop.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://goo.gl/eUC4xR) reports that 26-year-old Justin Johnson died early Wednesday morning.

DeLand police say Johnson had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend earlier and was following a taxi she was riding in when the cab driver called the police. An officer stopped Johnson and told him to get out of his vehicle after reportedly spotting drugs.

Police say Johnson drove off, dragging the officer for several feet. Johnson’s vehicle crashed a short time later, and police found that Johnson and a dog had died.

Johnson had been arrested in December and was awaiting trial for a gun possession charge. He was released from prison in 2013 after serving four years for attempted robbery.
