WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Delaware man has been posthumously awarded a medal that goes to civilians who risk their lives to save another.

The News Journal of Wilmington (https://tinyurl.com/hs37w7p) reports that relatives of Michael Manley of Wilmington accepted the Carnegie Medal on Saturday.

Manley rescued his girlfriend’s teenage son, Andrew Short, from drowning off the coast of Virginia Beach in 2015. Short had gotten caught in a rip current and Manley swam out to save him. Manley drowned after helping get the teen to safety.

The medal was presented on Saturday to Manley’s girlfriend, Amy Jo Fosdick, and their 5-year-old son, Michael Manley Jr.

The honors are handed out by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission to people around the country who are not police officers or firefighters but perform heroic actions.
