NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A Newport octogenarian and avid sailor who was struck by a car in the city this month has died.

Donald Ritter died Wednesday at Rhode Island Hospital, where he had been since he was struck Feb. 8.

Friends and family tell The Newport Daily News that Ritter liked to spend time with friends at The Reading Room, a private social club, and then go to Norey’s Restaurant for dinner. That is where he was headed when he was hit.

Before retirement, Ritter was the president of Ritter Transportation, a fuel truck transportation company and the owner of Mantissa Investment Corp.

He had lived in Newport since 1978.

Ritter was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old boy from Jamestown. Police say the case remains under investigation.
