TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a maintenance worker died in an elevator shaft at a Florida Panhandle medical building.

The Tallahassee Democrat (https://goo.gl/Df057l) reports that rescue workers found the man dead Friday morning after responding to a Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare building. It wasn’t immediately clear what killed the man.

Tallahassee Fire Department Capt. Mike Bellamy says the rescue operation began after the three people were removed from the stuck elevator, and the contract maintenance worker was unaccounted for.

TMH officials were unsure why the man was working in the shaft with an operational elevator. They say he was responding to a maintenance request placed Thursday night.

The death remains under investigation.
