SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Ana police are mourning the death of Zeus, one of the department’s horses that died this week during training.

Officials say the 21-year-old quarter horse collapsed Wednesday while going through exercises with the Orange County Regional Mounted Unit in Norco.

The cause of death is not yet known.

Corporal Anthony Bertagna says trainers noticed something was wrong with Zeus during training and tried to save the animal.

Santa Ana Police had nine horses, which are kept by the officers who ride them.

The Orange County Register says (https://bit.ly/2lbch4S ) Zeus joined the department in 2007 and served with Sgt. Kanan Blake, often patrolling streets and parks.

The newspaper says Zeus was also a fixture at schools and other community functions.
