PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Wholesale distributor United Natural Foods Inc. is seeking Rhode Island tax breaks as it prepares to hire 150 new employees in the coming years.

State Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor tells the Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2lbmBdf ) he expects the company to request at least $1.9 million through a tax credit program for companies that add jobs.

The Providence-based company distributes organic and specialty foods and other products to Whole Foods Market stores and other clients. It has more than 9,800 employees, including about 450 in Rhode Island; and it has 34 distribution centers in the United States and Canada.

The state says the company is also working on a long-term lease at a property in the Providence region. It’s planning an open house for job applicants at corporate headquarters on March 1.
