HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) - Two Prince George’s County police officers have been indicted on charges stemming from separate incidents.

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks tells local news media outlets that Cpl. George Merkel has been charged with misconduct in office and second-degree assault. Merkel is accused of hitting a homeless woman while on patrol in 2016.

Police say Cpl. William Diaz has been indicted on charges of misconduct in office and obstructing and hindering a police investigation. Diaz worked on a task force focused on prostitution.

Prosecutors say Diaz solicited a prostitute for sex while on duty at least twice and warned a prostitute about where the task force was working.

Both officers have been suspended.

A police spokesman said he doesn’t know whether they have attorneys and a spokeswoman for Alsobrooks didn’t immediately return a message.
