Mel Gibson is under consideration to direct the sequel to the 2016 comic-book flick “Suicide Squad,” Variety magazine reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.
“Gibson had said in the past that he wasn’t interested in directing a comic book movie so his involvement does seem odd, but sources now reveal that the filmmaker is excited about the prospect of working with this cast, specifically Will Smith,” Variety explained.
Ruben Fleischer, Daniel Espinosa and Jonathan Levine were also listed as directors being interviewed by Warner Bros., although the studio declined to comment for Variety’s story.
After about a decade of being a Hollywood pariah for anti-Semitic remarks he made during a DUI arrest, Mr. Gibson appears to have rehabilitated his image, as evidenced by the best picture and best director nominations for “Hacksaw Ridge.”
