ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo is bumping up funding proposals for Catskills ski resorts to attract visitors to upstate New York.

The Democrat announced Thursday he will propose an additional $8 million for upgrades at Belleayre Ski Center in Highmount in northern Ulster County.

The money will go toward a new high-speed gondola, childcare, retail space and dining options at each of the resort’s two lodges.

Cuomo says the improvements will boost the resort’s economic impact on the community and increase accessibility for visitors from New York City and other downstate areas.

Cuomo’s 2018 budget includes $12.5 million for Olympic Regional Development Authority facilities that include Belleayre, Whiteface and Gore mountains. Last month he announced he would propose an additional $20 million for Whiteface and Gore, located in the Adirondacks.
