The chairman and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee have asked the country’s top law enforcement officials for copies of the transcripts of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s conversations with a Russian diplomat, as well as a briefing on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Flynn’s resignation.
Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, and Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, asked that Justice Department and FBI officials with specific knowledge of issues surrounding Mr. Flynn to brief committee members and staff.
“We similarly request copies of the transcripts of Mr. Flynn’s intercepted calls and the FBI report summarizing the intercepted calls referenced in the media,” Mr. Grassley and Mrs. Feinstein wrote this week in a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director James B. Comey.
Mr. Flynn was forced to resign this week after he misled members of the Trump administration about the nature of his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak after November’s election.
Senate Democrats are demanding that Mr. Sessions, one of President Trump’s earliest Capitol Hill backers in last year’s election, recuse himself from any investigation related to the Trump campaign’s possible connections to Russian officials.
Mr. Sessions has previously said he doesn’t see a need to recuse himself from investigations into Mr. Flynn’s communications or Russian hacking.
