Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez applauded the news Wednesday that Andy Puzder is out of the running for his old job, saying the businessman was “unqualified” for the post and saying President Trump has done a lackluster job of vetting his inner circle.
Mr. Perez, who is running to be the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said his successor at the Department of Labor should be prepared to defend the overtime rule that was enacted on his watch and to fight for “retirement security.”
“It is hard to imagine someone worse than Andy Puzder,” Mr. Perez said in a conference call with reporters. “Maybe they will understand that you ought to vet your nominees before you nominate them.”
Mr. Perez also said the turmoil over the resignation of Michael Flynn as national security adviser also exposed flaws in Mr. Trump’s screening process.
“They are loose cannons, and a chaos cabinet and a chaos presidency is no way to run the United States of America,” Mr. Perez said.
Members of the Democratic National Committee are slated to pick a new chairman at their meeting next week in Atlanta.
