Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio on Wednesday plans to announce his support for South Carolina Democratic Chair Jaime Harrison’s bid to lead the Democratic National Committee.

Mr. Ryan raised his profile last year when he challenged Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California for the top Democratic post in the House.

The next DNC chair is slated to be picked next week during a DNC meeting in Atlanta, where its more than 400 members will cast votes.

Mr. Harrison has touted his track record of working on Capitol Hill for Rep. James E. Clyburn, as well as the work he has done leading Democrats in the red state of South Carolina, where he has developed programs aimed developing a new generation of Democratic activists and leaders.

Mr. Clyburn, a member of House Democratic leadership, endorsed Mr. Harrison early on in the race.

Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez are thought to be the top contenders for the post.

Mr. Perez announced this week that he has collected the support of 180 DNC members.
