WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Wilmington fire truck has been put back in service after it was taken out of operation during staffing shortages.

John Rago, a spokesman for Mayor Mike Purzycki, tells The News Journal of Wilmington (https://delonline.us/2kT7AhL) that Engine 6 will respond to calls while the city completes “an assessment of departmental fire operations.”

The funding is coming from “internal fire department budget lines.” The city wouldn’t immediately provide more information.

Fire Chief Anthony Goode announced in December that the truck would be taken out of operation when low staffing levels require the use of overtime pay to fill shifts.

Kevin Turner, president of the firefighter’s union, says that firefighters are happy to have the engine back because the closer an engine is to a blaze, the faster firefighters can respond.
