ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is touting his plan to force local governments to find ways to save money by sharing services and expenses.
The Democratic governor traveled to Long Island Wednesday to detail the proposal, which must be approved by lawmakers.
Cuomo wants to require community elected officials to come up with plans to share services or equipment. If local officials balk at implementing the cost-saving plans it would be up to voters to decide.
Cuomo says Long Island’s hundreds of overlapping municipalities and government bodies could reduce property taxes if they find ways to cooperate, such as sharing expensive equipment or teaming up when it comes to duplicative services.
The idea gained two prominent supporters Wednesday when the county executives of Nassau and Suffolk counties announced their support.
