Republicans in Michigan are reportedly considering Kid Rock, a Grammy-nominated performing artist and President Trump supporter, to challenge the Democratic incumbent in next year’s Senate race.
The musician, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, was named as a possible contender for Michigan Democrat Debbie Stabenow’s Senate seat during the state GOP’s annual convention over the weekend, Roll Call reported Tuesday.
“The rocker’s name came up as a possible candidate at a Michigan Republican Party convention last weekend. There have been no official decisions announced as of yet,” Roll Call reported.
Michigan GOP press officer Sarah Anderson told Fox News she was unaware of any interest to run on the musician’s part, but said she thought he’d make an “awesome” candidate.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a movement for him to run, but to my knowledge he has not been asked,” Ms. Anderson said.
Representatives for the perform did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Fox News and Billboard both reported Wednesday.
Ms. Stabenow, 66, represented Michigan’s eighth congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1997 to 2001, and has served in the U.S. Senate ever since.
Mr. Ritchie, 46, endorsed GOP presidential hopeful Ben Carson prior to campaigning for Mr. Trump in 2016.
“I’m digging Trump,” he told Rolling Stone last February. “My feeling: Let the [expletive] business guy run it like a [expletive] business.”
He has since begun selling Trump-themed apparel through his website, including a T-shirt that says “God, Guns & Trump” and “Make America Badass Again” hats.
Kid Rock’s 1998 album “Devil Without a Cause” sold 14 million copies internationally.
