WATERFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Union officials say 700 workers at an upstate New York chemical plant have voted to approve a new contract, ending a 15-week-long strike.
Dennis Trainor, vice president for CWA District One, said Tuesday the contract didn’t give workers everything they wanted, but it’s a substantial improvement over the original offer at Momentive Performance Materials in Waterford.
The union credited Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and other state officials for helping mediate the dispute.
The workers walked off the job Nov. 2 after rejecting a company offer that would reduce health insurance and retiree benefits. The Albany Times-Union reports (https://bit.ly/2kuVsQr ) workers approved the new contract by a roughly 3-to-2 margin.
Workers are expected to return to the job starting Wednesday.
