SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah officials are considering raising telephone fees in order to pay for upgrades to the state’s 911 and public safety radio system.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2kPgaOu ) that the Senate Transportation Committee on Monday endorsed a bill that would increase public safety fees by 38 cents each month, an increase of 50 percent. The bill would also make many reforms to the Utah Communications Authority after an official embezzled $1 million from it recently.

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Wayne Harper, R-Taylorsville, says the proposed $1.14 per line monthly fee would take effect July 2018 and would fund a planned $140 million upgrade to equipment.

The bill also would reduce the number of UCA Board members from 27 to 11 and would make board members subject to state Senate confirmation.
