PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) - Documents filed with Sarpy County indicate that Facebook may be considering building a data center in the area, which is already home to data centers for other large companies.
A company spokeswoman declined to comment, saying only that Facebook is evaluating potential data center sites, the Omaha World-Herald (https://bit.ly/2lLG5F7 ) reported.
Facebook has not confirmed the site, but the data center applications are signed by an LLC with the same California address as Facebook’s headquarters. Another address in the applications is of a law firm that has previously represented Facebook in a number of acquisitions.
If the company selects the site south of Papillion, it’ll operate among Yahoo, Fidelity, Cabela’s and Travelers which also have data centers in the county.
Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Andrew Rainbolt said the data center could see a groundbreaking by this spring.
“We’re hopeful everything gets finalized, but we don’t know exactly when,” he said.
The data center plans to involve four 610,000-square-foot buildings east and west of Highway 50, with a tunnel under the highway to connect the two campuses. The site is expected to operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The project’s final plat said the largest work shift would involve less than 150 data center employees.
Rainbolt said the development corporation has been working with the company on the data center for about a year.
The city of Papillion has already approved multiple layers of the project, and the company has negotiated the purchase of the land the site will use. Those property owners were not aware of who specifically was buying their land.
