Rep. Chris Collins, New York Republican, said Tuesday it’s “time to move on” and look to the future after National Security Adviser Michael Flynn resigned his position Monday evening.
“To be honest, I just live in a world where I always move forward,” Mr. Collins, a top ally of President Trump, said on CNN’s “New Day.” “In a busy world, you don’t dwell on the past.”
“I call it a ’Guess what? Now what?’ world. Guess what? He’s resigned. Now what? We’ve got a lot of issues to deal with,” he said. “That’s the way I live my life. I don’t dwell on the past. General Flynn has resigned.”
“Today, it’s a sad day. General Flynn has resigned. It’s in his determination that’s best for the country,” Mr. Collins said. “I respect that. He’s a gentleman. He’s a great American, and I’m not going to pile on.”
“We move on from here,” he said. “I’m not going to be one, nor would I hope others would dwell on this situation or pile on, to use another term.”
“I think it’s just time to move on,” Mr. Collins said.
Mr. Flynn resigned his position Monday evening. The White House said he misled Vice President Mike Pence on the nature of Mr. Flynn’s talks with the Russian ambassador to the United States last year after November’s election.
Mr. Flynn had denied he talked about U.S. sanctions against Russia before later saying he couldn’t be sure.
“Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology,” Mr. Flynn said in his resignation letter Monday.
It’s unlikely Democrats are going to just let the issue go, particularly after the U.S. intelligence community concluded that Russia intervened in last year’s election to help Mr. Trump.
