HEBER CITY, Utah (AP) - Three people died and two others were hospitalized after a head-on highway crash near Hebert City on Tuesday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred early Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 40 near Heber City when a Honda sedan crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Kia, Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said. Both cars were traveling faster than the speed limit, Royce said.

The drivers of both cars died, along with a female passenger in the Honda.

The names of the dead and injured weren’t immediately made public.

One of the hospitalized is a woman who was in extremely critical condition, Royce said. The other is a man who was treated for injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators don’t know why the sedan crossed into oncoming traffic, Royce said.

The highway was closed for several hours while authorities investigated.

Hebert City is a small mountain city about 45 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.
