DETROIT (AP) - Detroit police say an officer fatally shot a man who fled from a crash and then lunged at him while being arrested.
Police Chief James Craig says the shooting occurred on the city’s west side Monday afternoon. He says officers were trying to stop a speeding vehicle but the driver didn’t stop and struck a utility pole. He then fled from the scene and one officer chased him for about a quarter mile.
Craig says that as the officer was taking the man into custody behind a vacant house, the suspect lunged in the officer’s direction. He says the officer fired one shot, striking the man in the lower torso, and paramedics pronounced him dead.
The suspect’s name hasn’t been released. Craig says the man appeared to be about 25.
