PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) - A Pueblo police officer has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the shooting death of an armed man who was wanted for escape from the Colorado Department of Corrections.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported (https://bit.ly/2l2uRMm) Monday the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office found Officer Michael Bellamy justified in the June death of Bobby Sanchez.

Authorities had spotted 32-year-old Sanchez running from the back of a home after the Colorado Springs man absconded from parole and was wanted on an escape warrant.

Investigators say Sanchez ignored Bellamy’s commands to show his hands and instead pulled out a handgun, prompting Bellamy to open fire.

Sanchez died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

District Attorney Jeff Chostner says Bellamy was acting in self-defense and protecting others at the time of the shooting.
