BALTIMORE (AP) - A report says that footage collected by a surveillance plane in Baltimore helped police to advance investigation in several cases.
The Baltimore Sun reports that (https://bsun.md/2kEJkQn ) the Washington-based Police Foundation concluded that the Baltimore Police aerial surveillance program has the potential to be a successful tool, but needs to be studied more.
A pilot program using a surveillance plane began in January 2016 and was not initially disclosed to Baltimore’s mayor, city council or other elected officials. Police Spokesman T.J. Smith said the department hasn’t made a decision yet on future aerial surveillance use.
The Police Foundation found that the footage advanced the investigations of seven shootings and three homicides. It said that Baltimore officials need to decide if the program is worth the “inherent challenge in using it.”
