DARMSTADT, Germany (AP) - Around 90 Borussia Dortmund fans apparently intent on violence were prevented from traveling to Darmstadt for the Bundesliga game between the sides on Saturday.

Police in the state of Hessen say they stopped two buses of Dortmund fans and found them armed with flares, combat gloves, balaclavas, painkillers, drugs, and Darmstadt banners.

Police say “it was quickly apparent that the passengers wanted to go to Darmstadt for other reasons than to follow the football game peacefully in the stadium.”

Some of those detained were known hooligans.

Dortmund is yet to respond to the German football federation, which wants to fine the club 100,000 euros ($106,000) and close the south stand of its stadium for one league game following previous fan disturbances at games.

Dortmund lost at bottom club Darmstadt 2-1.
