MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Scott Walker has appointed a Milwaukee voucher school leader to be secretary of the state department that regulates the licensing of professionals.

Walker announced Friday that he had appointed Laura Gutierrez to serve as secretary of the state Department of Safety and Professional Services. She will begin the job on Thursday.

She is vice-president of academic affairs at St. Anthony School in Milwaukee.

The department Gutierrez will oversee licenses and regulates more than 200 different types of credentials. Walker is calling for an overhaul of the occupational licensing system in Wisconsin, including reviewing which credentials currently required may not be needed.

Gutierrez will replace Dave Ross, who resigned to become secretary of the Department of Transportation in December.
