PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Chicago-based energy company seeking to build a gas-fired power plant in the Rhode Island town of Burrillville has failed to sell the second half of the proposed plant’s power output to the regional electric grid.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2ksWai5 ) that the results of the auction held by Independent System Operator New England were announced Thursday.

Last year, Invenergy had sold 485 megawatts of power- equivalent to the capacity of one of the plant’s two generating systems -but was unable to sell the power from the other system. The company had come back again for the auction on Monday but its bid wasn’t selected.

Company officials say Invenergy’s plans for the proposed plant remain unchanged.

A lawyer for Burrillville says Invenergy should rethink whether the plant is financially viable.
