Bill Maher would “happily” hand over the $1 million he donated to then-President Barack Obama in 2012 to Mitt Romney if it would alter history.

HBO’s “Real Time” host sat down with CNN’s Van Jones for an interview set to air Friday night and discussed the law of unintended consequences now that President Trump is the 45th U.S. commander in chief. The comedian lamented his Priorities USA Action donation aimed at stopping Mr. Romney’s presidential ambitions.

“Oh, the Bush years. I wish,” Mr. Maher told the CNN host. “You know, I gave Obama a million dollars. You know that, right? His PAC. I would happily give that million dollars right now to Mitt Romney if he would take over the country. I gave it to prevent Mitt Romney president — I would [be] begging Mitt Romney to be president”

The crowd laughed before Mr. Maher, an atheist who starred in the 2008 documentary “Religulous,” joked that he would embrace the former Massachusetts governor’s faith if it would end the Trump administration.

“I would become a Mormon. How about that?” the comedian asked. “I will become a Mormon and give you a million dollars, Mitt Romney, if you will please take over the country.”

Mr. Maher told The New York Times in January that he was slightly nostalgic for former President George W. Bush because “it never crossed my mind — that George Bush would do something crazy.”

The comedian then noted how Mr. Trump briefly issued a $5 million lawsuit against him in 2013 after a “Tonight Show” joke about the billionaire’s mother.

Mr. Maher’s full interview with air tonight on CNN at 9 p.m. EST.
