WAYNESBORO, Va. (AP) - Waynesboro officials are unhappy the city isn’t guaranteed any funding from a proposed $50 million environmental settlement that aims to make up for the toxic mercury DuPont released for decades into the South River.

The News Leader reports (https://bit.ly/2koR7Sz ) officials submitted comments critical of the plan on Monday as the public input period on the proposal came to an end. A judge still must sign off on the plan, which was announced in December.

Projects the money would pay for include wildlife habitat restoration, water quality enhancement and improvements to recreational areas. But the comments say that the Waynesboro community is “stunned” that the settlement doesn’t include “direct ecological, environmental, and recreational benefit within the city of Waynesboro.”
