CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Ruby, who landed the conviction of ex-Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship, has resigned to become a partner at the Charleston office of Bailey & Glasser LLP.
The law firm says Ruby left the U.S. attorney’s office for southern West Virginia last month.
Ruby helped investigate a 2010 explosion that killed 29 coal miners at the Upper Big Branch Mine in southern West Virginia. The investigation yielded several Massey convictions and ended with a 2015 jury trial that put Blankenship in prison for a year for conspiring to willfully violate safety standards at the mine. Blankenship will be released in May.
Ruby also landed public corruption convictions against several southern West Virginia elected officials.
Ruby graduated from Duke University and Washington and Lee University School of Law.
